Creating a Passion for Learning
While working as a long term substitute in Elyria, I had the honor or teaching American History during an election year. As my students and I learned about the history of our nation and the branches of government, we were able to bring this learning to life and watch history in the making as McCain and Obama ran for election. As the video about shows, students were caught up in the historical nature of the election. Seeing this as a valuable teachable moment, my colleagues and I took the opportunity to use the students' excitement to accelerate their learning. We worked across subjects to bring the election and the Presidential Inauguration to life.

Field Trips
This year also afforded me the freedom to plan field trips. Although there were several field trips, my personal favorite was an interactive experience at the Burrell Homestead, an actual stop on the Underground, located in the French Creek Reservation of the Lorain County Metroparks.
After learning about African culture, slavery, and the Underground Railroad in class, the field trip allowed students to be transported back in time and experience what it may have been like to flee from slavery and oppression on the Underground Railroad.
